UNPO Appeal on Balochistan
The
Hague, 26 April - UNPO has issued an appeal to the authorities in Pakistan
to raise concern about recent incidents regarding the Baloch people, who
are increasingly suffering human rights violations.
On the morning of 4 April 2006 Munir Mengal was arbitrarily arrested by
intelligence agents at Karachi airport. Munir Mengal is the director of
"Baloch Voice", the first independent Baloch-language satellite television
channel. It is reported that Munir Mengal was taken away by staff of the
Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), an intelligence service under the
control of the army and his location is so far unknown.
Another incident regarding Balochistan people concerns the fact that
Iranian military and intelligence forces are also said to be involved in
the killing of three Baloch Sunni clerics and their two associates. On
Monday 10th of April 2006, the three Baloch clerics, Molavi Nea'matulla
Mirbalochzahi, Molavi Abdul Hakim Gamshadzahi, Molavi Abdullah Narooi and
their two associates were reported to be killed in a “suspicious” car
accident.
Taking into consideration these developments, UNPO has urged President
Pervez Musharraf;
to inform about the whereabouts of Munir Mengal, to ensure that he not
tortured or ill-treated, and to urge Munir Mengal's immediate and
unconditional release, unless he is charged with a recognizably criminal
offence;
to take the necessary steps to bring to justice those responsible for the
attack on 10 April which caused the death of the three Baloch clerics,
Molavi Nea'matulla Mirbalochzahi, Molavi Abdul Hakim Gamshadzahi, Molavi
Abdullah Narooi and their two associates; and to put an end to the human
rights violations against the Baloch people.
